Gavin John

Gavin John is a Canadian journalist and photographer specializing in strategic studies, national defense, Arctic and northern security, Indigenous affairs, and climate issues.

Since 2012, he has produced in-depth visual and written reporting for leading national and international publications.

His work emphasizes sustained, relationship-based field reporting in remote, hostile, and politically sensitive environments, with a focus on translating operational and policy realities into accessible, ethical, and accountable ethnographic journalism.

He holds formal education in Journalism and International Relations and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.
